As a child, Mehta lived in a number of different places. He attended Lawrence School in Sanawar and Sevenoaks School in Kent. While attending university, he earned his M.A. in English Literature from Cambridge University.
A literary savant, Mehta guided the fortunes of Alfred A. Knopf for 32 years. He died Monday at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The cause was complications related to pneumonia. His legacy is being carried on by a number of literary foundations, including the Alfred A. Knopf Foundation, which has established the Sonny Mehta Fellowships in Poetry and Fiction.
UEA’s Creative Writing Programme
